CHAFER GRUBS & LEATHER JACKETS

Chafer grubs and leatherjackets are both lawn pests that can damage grass roots, but they differ in appearance and origin.

Chafer grubs are the larvae of chafer beetles, and are creamy-white, C-shaped grubs with six legs and a brown head.

Leatherjackets are the larvae of crane flies (daddy longlegs), and are greyish-brown, legless, and lack a distinct head.

Chafer grubs and leatherjackets are two of the most common – and destructive – lawn pests in the UK.

Left untreated, they feed on grass roots, causing thinning, yellowing, and bare patches that invite further damage from birds and wildlife searching for food.

If you’ve noticed loose turf, spongy patches, or increased bird activity, these pests could be the cause.
