Front of House
Project Year: 2023
Location: Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire
Time to Complete: 3 weeks
The Brief
This project focused on creating an impressive front garden that would complement the scale and character of a substantial property.
With such a generous outdoor space, the design needed to make a statement. We wanted a garden that felt elegant, structured and welcoming, with formal planting, attractive pathways and carefully considered features that would enhance the appearance of their home.
Our approach was to create a sense of grandeur through symmetry, established planting and a harmonious combination of natural materials, ensuring the garden felt in proportion to the house.
The Design
The main pathway from the entrance gate towards the house forms the central feature of the design, dividing the lawn into two distinct areas and establishing a strong sense of symmetry.
Carefully positioned planting on either side of the pathway creates a formal, balanced appearance, drawing the eye towards the property and providing an impressive welcome. The scale of the planting was particularly important. With such a substantial house, smaller plants would have appeared lost within the landscape. Instead, we selected established, carefully shaped specimens to provide immediate impact and ensure the garden complemented the proportions of the building. The result is a striking entrance that feels elegant, purposeful and beautifully balanced.
To the side of the house was a generous area that could easily have been left as additional lawn. However, we wanted to ensure this space had its own identity rather than becoming an overlooked part of the garden. We introduced a pathway leading to a beautifully positioned bench, creating a destination and encouraging the clients to explore and enjoy this quieter area.
As with the main entrance, symmetry plays an important role in the design, with carefully arranged planting framing the pathway and seating area. While a sculpture could have provided a decorative focal point, the bench offers something more practical — an inviting place to sit, relax and appreciate the surroundings. This thoughtful addition transforms what might otherwise have been an unused space into an attractive and purposeful part of the garden.
Formal planting was essential to achieving the desired appearance, with shaped Prunus lusitanica (Portuguese Laurel) providing height, structure and year-round greenery. These carefully positioned specimens draw the eye towards the seating area and create a strong architectural presence within the garden. The pathway is also flanked by rows of lavender, introducing a softer, more natural contrast to the structured evergreen planting. As the lavender matures, it will create beautiful ribbons of colour and fragrance along the pathway, adding seasonal interest while attracting bees, butterflies and other pollinators. The accompanying 3D design images illustrate how the planting will develop over time, demonstrating the striking effect of the lavender in full flower. This combination of formal evergreen structure and softer flowering plants ensures the garden retains its elegant appearance while offering colour, fragrance and wildlife interest throughout the seasons.
The choice of materials was carefully considered to ensure the landscaping worked harmoniously with the house. Pink granite gravel was selected for its attractive colour, which complements both the brickwork of the property and the warm tones of the sandstone paving. The combination of gravel, paving and neatly shaped planting creates a refined, formal appearance, with the contrasting textures adding visual interest without overwhelming the design.
Positioning established plants within the gravel further enhances the structured character of the garden, creating strong shapes and defined spaces. Along the brick boundary wall, the planting continues the symmetrical theme, with substantial specimens providing an immediate sense of maturity and balance. The overall planting scheme is deliberately low maintenance, relying on carefully chosen evergreen structure and repeating forms to maintain its appearance throughout the year.
This project demonstrates how thoughtful design, carefully selected materials and appropriately scaled planting can transform a large front garden into an impressive setting for a beautiful home. The symmetrical pathways, shaped Portuguese Laurel, established planting and lavender-lined seating area combine to create a garden that feels formal yet welcoming. Every element has been designed to complement the scale of the property, while the use of pink granite gravel and sandstone paving brings warmth and cohesion to the overall scheme.
The result is a striking, low-maintenance front garden that offers year-round structure, seasonal colour and a sense of timeless elegance. A grand entrance that perfectly complements the home, creating a lasting first impression.
