Garden to Complement the House
Project Year: 2021
Location: Collingham, Nottinghamshire
Time to Complete: 7 weeks
The Brief
This project was designed to complement the clients' impressive home, creating a beautiful outdoor environment that reflected the property's architecture while providing practical spaces for everyday living and entertaining.
The clients wanted a contemporary garden with several distinct areas for both formal and informal gatherings, alongside a natural-looking water feature that would bring movement, sound and wildlife into the space.
The transformation extended across the front, sides and rear of the property, ensuring the landscaping flowed naturally around the house and created a cohesive overall design.
The Design
Set well back from the road, the property offered generous space at the front for a driveway and an attractive lawn area.
The landscaping was carefully considered to complement the scale and style of the house, creating a welcoming approach while maintaining a sense of openness.
Alongside the property, we introduced a charming seating area featuring a bench positioned between two raised planting beds. Located conveniently near the kitchen door, these beds provide the perfect opportunity to grow fresh herbs and salad crops, making them both practical and attractive. This sheltered spot also offers a peaceful place to enjoy a morning coffee, demonstrating how even the smaller areas around a property can become useful and inviting spaces.
The rear garden was designed around several individual seating areas, each with its own character, while carefully selected materials create a natural connection between them.
The main outdoor dining area features contemporary porcelain paving in complementary shades of grey, providing an elegant and practical space for entertaining family and friends. From here, the paving leads towards a more sheltered seating area beneath the property's balcony. Porcelain planks were chosen for this covered space, introducing a subtle change in texture and helping to distinguish it from the main dining terrace.
The step leading into this area is highlighted with decorative mosaic tiles, creating an attractive design detail that adds interest and character.
These same mosaic tiles are incorporated into the water feature, visually connecting the different spaces and ensuring the overall design feels considered and cohesive. The bespoke water feature is one of the most distinctive elements of this garden. It provides a beautiful contrast to the clean lines and contemporary materials used elsewhere. Water flows gently into a pond surrounded by carefully arranged rocks and cobbles, creating a natural appearance and the relaxing sound of moving water. Water lilies and other aquatic planting soften the edges of the pond, helping it blend into the surrounding garden while creating a valuable habitat for wildlife. The combination of natural stone, planting and flowing water gives this feature a sense of maturity, as though it has always been part of the landscape. It provides an attractive focal point that can be enjoyed from the surrounding seating areas, bringing a feeling of tranquillity to the contemporary setting.
The completed garden successfully balances contemporary design with natural beauty. The different seating areas provide flexibility for everything from quiet morning coffees to larger gatherings, while the carefully chosen paving materials and decorative details complement the architecture of the house.
At the heart of the design, the naturalistic pond introduces movement, sound and wildlife, softening the modern landscaping and creating a garden that feels established and welcoming. The result is an elegant, versatile outdoor space that complements the property beautifully and offers opportunities for enjoyment throughout the year.
A contemporary garden with timeless appeal, where modern outdoor living meets the tranquillity of nature.
