The Brief

Every garden has its own character, but this project was particularly special, as the entire design was inspired by one extraordinary feature. The clients had acquired a magnificent sculpture that they wanted to become the focal point of their outdoor space. Our challenge was to create a garden that would showcase this unique piece of art while ensuring the surrounding landscaping complemented its shape, scale and position.

With an existing garden room and several mature trees already in place, the design also needed to connect the different areas of the garden, creating an attractive and practical outdoor space that could be enjoyed from several viewpoints.

The Design

The sculpture became the starting point for the entire design. To provide a striking backdrop, we created a sweeping arc of vertically positioned timber sleepers. This distinctive feature frames the sculpture, giving it prominence while introducing height, texture and architectural interest. As the sculpture has a natural leaning position, we deliberately placed it off-centre within the arrangement. A circular base formed from carefully laid setts provides a defined setting, creating a balanced composition that draws the eye towards the artwork.

We then carried this circular theme through into the surrounding lawn, establishing a visual connection between the sculpture and the wider garden. Ornamental grasses were carefully positioned to echo the sculpture's flowing form. Their soft, natural movement provides a beautiful contrast to the solid materials and helps integrate the artwork into the landscape. The result is a distinctive focal point that feels both dramatic and perfectly at home within its surroundings.

An existing garden room provided another important element to incorporate into the design. We introduced a pathway connecting the house to the garden room, making access easier and encouraging the clients to use this part of their outdoor space more frequently A seating area was also created around the garden room, providing an inviting place to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

The sculpture was carefully positioned so that it could be appreciated from both the main house and the garden room, ensuring it remained a prominent feature from different viewpoints. This thoughtful arrangement allows the artwork to be enjoyed throughout the garden rather than from just one location.

A group of mature trees in the centre of the garden naturally divided the outdoor space into two distinct areas.Rather than removing this separation, we embraced it as an opportunity to create a sense of discovery. A woodland walkway was introduced between the trees, providing an attractive route from one part of the garden to the other. Carefully positioned lighting enhances the trees and pathway after dark, adding atmosphere and allowing this feature to be appreciated during the evening. Emerging from the woodland walk, the garden opens into a more spacious lawned area. The clients wanted this section to remain simple and uncluttered, providing a peaceful contrast to the more detailed landscaping surrounding the sculpture. This balance between statement features and open space ensures the garden feels interesting without becoming overwhelming.

This project demonstrates how a garden can be designed around a single treasured feature while still creating a practical and beautifully connected outdoor space. From the striking sleeper arc and circular detailing to the ornamental grasses, woodland walkway and inviting garden room, every element was carefully considered to complement the sculpture and enhance the surrounding landscape. The mature trees provide natural structure, while the combination of open lawn, seating areas and thoughtfully positioned lighting creates a garden with different experiences to enjoy throughout the day and evening.

The result is a truly individual garden that reflects the clients' personality and celebrates their love of art. A unique outdoor space where landscape design and sculpture come together to create something extraordinary.
